Vlogmas | December 20-25

Image
It's the last week of Vlogmas! I talk about knitting my Mom a pair of Christmas socks, what I read for #25DaysofManga, share some new manga I received, and do a little baking. I also continue to open my Very Minty Christmas Yarn Advent Calendar from Yarn Cafe Creations and share with you what all the skeins I received in the Advent Calendar look like together. These will be mostly end of day diary type entries with a few little extras thrown in. The very same video is being posted to my Book/Manga channel, so if you are a subscriber to both, I just wanted to let you know and Thank You! I will not be posting any links to mentions in this video, but if you have any questions about anything I've mentioned, please let me know ^-^

Manga Haul | October 2020

Finished Series: My Thoughts on Corpse Party: Book of Shadows

Image
Corpse Party: Book of Shadows by Makoto Kedouin My rating: 3 of 5 stars I thought this was going to be a sequel to Corpse Party: Blood Covered, but that's not what this is. This is a story of alternate situations, I suppose you could say. Since this is based on a game, maybe this shows us what we'd see if we made different choices than in the previous series? I'm not sure, but it feels like that to me. This series is definitely more mature and is age rated as such. This does offer new scenes which made the read interesting, however I did feel myself skimming over story I had already read from the previous series. View all my reviews

Manga Freakathon Wrap Up | 2020

In this video I give my thoughts on The Voynich Hotel and Corpse Party: Blood Covered, which I read during the Manga Freakathon this year. I also share with you my bingo board results! Links after the break.

Finished Series: My Thoughts on Corpse Party: Blood Covered, Vol. 5

Image
Corpse Party: Blood Covered, Vol. 5 by Makoto Kedouin My rating: 3 of 5 stars This was an interesting story. I think this story would've worked better for me as a light novel as opposed to a manga though. Some of the scenes were very gruesome and I found myself glancing over panels instead of really looking at them. It was hard enough for me to re-read the first volume this year when I decided to finally read this series to completion as I had remembered clearly the demise of one of the characters. I had figured out one part of the mystery early on and that brought the suspense level down a bit for me. There was a bit of fan service that I didn't appreciate though I think it was supposed to help alleviate some of the depressing situations that were occurring. The end of this story included a tidbit that I didn't find necessary to the story of this group though I did appreciate catching up with them in the aftermath. I presume the very end leads into the sequel story, whi...

Series First Impressions | The Supernaturals & Spirit Hunters

Image
My thoughts on The Supernaturals by David L. Golemon and Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh. Do you have any recommendations for books about haunted houses? If so, please let me know down below! I only ask that they have been released within the last 30 years ^-^

Finished Series: The Voynich Hotel Vol. 3

Image
The Voynich Hotel Vol. 3 by Seiman Douman My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read for the #mangafreakathon I have to confess that for a good part of this series, I was confused. Even though I read all three volumes back to back, I'm cloudy about what I read. There didn't seem to be a focus, at least not one that was obvious to me. There are so many story lines and the story telling seemed very choppy because of it. The art style is definitely unique and even though this experience wasn't amazing for me, I would be open to reading something else by this mangaka in the future. View all my reviews

Books: My Thoughts on Trick or Treat

Image
Trick or Treat by Richie Tankersley Cusick My rating: 4 of 5 stars A quick read, perfect for the season. I am pretty sure I read this one when I was a teen. Parts of it were slightly familiar but I didn't remember a lot of it. This read was really nostalgic for me as I read a few from this author and other Point Horror authors when I was growing up. It made me want to re-visit some of those books now! View all my reviews

#Book1CoziesClub Series First Impressions | Harper Connelly & Ghost Dusters

Image
My thoughts on the first book in the Harper Connelly series, Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris. I also talk about what I thought of The Remains of the Dead, which is the first book in the Ghost Dusters series by Wendy Roberts. These were the September and October #Book1CoziesClub selections. I announce the November selection in this video as well and would love it if you would join us for this read in the Mystery Madness Goodreads Group !

Manga: My Thoughts on Love Massage: Melting Beauty Treatment, Volume 3

Image
Love Massage: Melting Beauty Treatment Vol. 3 by Toki Sunazuka My rating: 3 of 5 stars Not sure I'm going to continue with this series. This story is entertaining but doesn't really have any substance for me at this point. I'm also not curious to see where their relationship goes. This volume served as a good ending point for me. I will need to let this series sit for a while and see if I want to revisit these characters again in the future. View all my reviews

Books: My Thoughts on The Harrowing

Image
The Harrowing by Alexandra Sokoloff My rating: 4 of 5 stars This book took me the shortest amount of time to read of any book I've read recently. It pulled me in from the start and kept me turning pages until the end. I really enjoyed this one though the religious aspects to the story were not something I expected. The main character got on my nerves at times, especially with her attention to the boys around. That being said, this was still an enjoyable read and I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future. View all my reviews

#Book1CoziesClub: My Thoughts on The Remains of the Dead (Ghost Dusters #1)

Image
The Remains of the Dead by Wendy Roberts My rating: 4 of 5 stars I really enjoyed this one. Crime scene clean up is not something that comes to mind when you think about professions, but it is definitely an important one. Having details about what that job entails along with the mystery aspect of this novel was very interesting for me. The twist at the end was sad and unexpected. The investigation kept my interest and I look forward to reading more in this series. View all my reviews

I am participating in the 8-Bit Geek-a-long hosted by Lattes & Llamas! I am several weeks behind but I am documenting my journey for you in this series of videos. In this video I share with you my first sleeve, which are Clues 1 & 2. I also talk about how I had trouble interpreting what the pattern was trying to say in the increase sections of the sleeve and I discuss my feelings participating in the #SlipstravaganzaMKAL where I am working on the project as the clues release vs participating in this make-a-long where I am working behind the release of the clues. Which do you prefer, working a mystery knit-a-long to date with the clue releases or behind the clue releases? Books: My Thoughts on Spirit Hunters (Spirit Hunters #1)

Image
Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh My rating: 4 of 5 stars More like a 3.5 This book took me a really long time to get into. Once it finally pulled me in, it ended up not being the read I was looking for. No fault at all of the book, but this type of story was just not what I was looking for. The older sister and mom really got on my nerves too. I do enjoy my share of Korean dramas so it was interesting to see things I've heard of make appearances in the story. I believe there is at least one other book out in this series right now. I may pick it up in the future when my reading tastes aren't so finicky. It was still an enjoyable read and I am interested in checking out other work by this author. View all my reviews

Free Knitting Pattern | Go Mi Nam Hat

Image
Ten years ago, I came up with my first pattern. I was inspired by a hat that was worn by the main character, Go Mi Nam, in the Korean Drama You're Beautiful . It took me a couple tries to get it right, but I finally got it. You can read about my journey in creating this pattern through my Ravelry Project Pages here , and here . I've also knit a couple more hats from my pattern - one for my daughter and one for me . I wrote a blog post in 2014 saying that I was in the process if writing the pattern, but I never released it. I actually typed it up the same month I wrote that blog post, but never had enough courage to post it. I've recently been thinking about this pattern and figured that if I didn't post it now, I would never post it so here it is! The pattern is free and can only be found here on my blog for right now. It also has not been test knit, so just know that going in. I have not knit one in a while, but would be happy to help with any questions you may h...

Knitting Diary | Newborn Vertebrae

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern : Newborn Vertebrae by Kelly van Niekirk (only on Ravelry) Needle : US 2 - 2.75mm                  US 3 - 3.25mm Yarn :  Filcolana Arwetta Classic in color 811 Started : September 23, 2020 Completed : September 29, 2020 Notes : Making this for my cousin's first child due in November     9/28/2020 : Finished the body and first sleeve. I do not like how the sleeve pick up went. I was surprised that the instructions did not state to cast on a couple stitches after placing the sleeve stitches on hold. The pick up to close the hole under the arm still leaves a hole no matter where I pick up the extra stitch to join in the round. I will probably need to go in and weave it together after I'm done.

#Book1CoziesClub | My Thoughts on Grave Sight (Harper Connelly #1)

Image
Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read for #Book1CoziesClub I really enjoyed this book. It was just the type of story I was looking for when I picked it up. I find Harper's ability interesting, but there were definitely a few things I could've done without in the story regarding her family. I suppose we were introduced to those characters for more that will come in later books, but I found that those appearances slowed down the main one for me. That being said, this will definitely be a series that I continue. View all my reviews

Finished Series: My Thoughts on Peach Mermaid, Volume 3

Image
Peach Mermaid Vol. 3 by Haru Akebono My rating: 3 of 5 stars Entertaining series and a quick read. Not sure it will be one I reach for again though, even though I own it. I really enjoyed the mangaka's notes in between chapters. Read for the #fallintomangalove Readathon. View all my reviews

Knitting Diary | Eight Bit

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern : Eight Bit by Lattes & Llamas (only on Ravelry) Needle : US 2.5 - 3.00mm                  US 4 - 3.50mm Yarn :  Lion Brand Mandala in Spirit              Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek DK in Black Started : September 10, 2020 Completed : Notes : This will be my first all over colorwork garment 9/20/20: Knitting Diary | 8-bit & Vegas Vlog 10/5/20: Still on Clue 1, but I'm loving the look so far. I got confused with the directions for chart A but didn't notice I worked it wrong until I was done with the first 15 rows.....Needless to say I had to rip it back and redo it. Apparently I'm the only one that didn't understand the instruction! When the instruction said work chart A around, I took that to mean work the chart the entire way around the sleeve and that was not right. I ripped back the 15 rows and worked chart A once then continued the grid patt...

Finished Series: My Thoughts on Kenka Bancho Otome, Volume 2

Image
Kenka Bancho Otome: Love's Battle Royale, Vol. 2 by Chie Shimada My rating: 4 of 5 stars I didn't enjoy this volume as much as the first one, but on a whole this was a very enjoyable series. I wish there was a bit more! Will definitely be looking into the anime.  Read for #fallintomangalove View all my reviews

Manga: My Thoughts on Kenka Bancho Otome, Volume 1

Kenka Bancho Otome: Love's Battle Royale, Vol. 1 by Chie Shimada My rating: 5 of 5 stars I'm probably being a bit generous with my rating, but I thoroughly enjoyed this volume. I can't wait to see how this all ends up!  Read for #fallintomangalove View all my reviews

Books: My Thoughts on The Supernaturals (Supernaturals #1)

Image
The Supernaturals by David L. Golemon My rating: 4 of 5 stars More like a 3.5 This read was really slow for me and I'm pretty sure that it was because of the focus on the television show aspect. I would've much preferred more in regards to the haunted house aspect instead as those parts really kept my interest. I will be reading the sequel because I believe that won't have a focus away from the haunted house, but we shall see. View all my reviews

Knitting Diary | Arachne

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern :   Arachne by Andi Satterlund (redirects to Untangling Knots) Needle : US4 - 3.50mm Yarn :  Knit Picks Galileo in Lunar and Pearl Started : August 26, 2020 Completed : October 31, 2021 Notes : It is too hot where I live to wear a full wool garment in October, so I though this wool/bamboo blend would be nice. My plan is to make the sleeves a bit shorter as well, 3/4 or less. After swatching with a size 5, 4, and 3 needle, I couldn't get more than 18 stitches per 4 inches. With a size 2 needle, I got 19 stitches. Of course, as I went down in needle size, the stitch height got smaller and smaller, but the stitch width did not. After some thought, I decided to do some math and go ahead with a size 4 needle. With my gauge, I could work a Medium and get the right size (roughly a 54 inch bust which includes 6 inches of positive ease). The plan is to work the colorwork incorporating the Ladderback Jacquard method, which is new to me. Als...

#Book1CoziesClub: My Thoughts on Aunt Dimity's Death (Aunt Dimity Mystery #1)

Image
Aunt Dimity's Death by Nancy Atherton My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read for #Book1CoziesClub I really enjoyed this book. It's been a very long time since I read a mystery that didn't revolve around a murder, and I found it very refreshing. It also gave way to a very relaxed read which was a nice change of pace for me. I'll definitely be reading more installments from this series in the future. View all my reviews

Books: My Thoughts on Devil Sharks

Image
Devil Sharks by Chris Jameson My rating: 3 of 5 stars While this did fit the bill for a Shark Week read, I did not find it as entertaining as Shark Island . There were things I didn't enjoy and things I questioned in this story. This book, like the other, includes several shark attack scenes and will not be for everyone. Looking forward to reading Shark Beach next year during Shark Week. View all my reviews

My thoughts on the first book in the Cooking Class Mystery Series by Miranda Bliss. This was the #Book1CoziesClub selection for July 2020. If you have read Cooking Up Murder, please come share your thoughts with us in the Mystery Madness Goodreads Group !

#Book1CoziesClub: My Thoughts on Cooking Up Murder (A Cooking Class Mystery #1)

Image
Cooking Up Murder by Miranda Bliss My rating: 3 of 5 stars Read for #Book1CoziesClub This was entertaining, but I wouldn't say I'm invested in theses characters after this first installment. While I did enjoy watching Annie evolve into an amateur detective, I disliked Eve. I did find it interesting that Eve was the catalyst to investigate this case, however the reason she wanted to start to investigate made me shake my head. I also disliked that this book heavily mentions the two main character's exes. Would I read the next installment? Sure. Would I feel like I'm missing out on something if I didn't read the next installment? I wouldn't. View all my reviews

Knitting Diary | Christmas in July Short & Sweet Socks

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern: Short & Sweet by Kay Jones Paid or Free: Free to Silver, Gold, and Platinum Bakery Bear Patrons Needle: US1 - 2.25 Yarn:  Lolodidit Sparkle Sock in Joy - 1/2 skein               Knit Picks Stroll Fingering in Everglade Heather - 1/2 skein Started: July 28,2020 Completed: August 22, 2020 Notes: I really wanted to cast on a pair of Christmas socks this month, but I couldn't bring myself to do it with two almost complete sweaters on the needles. Now that those are done, I've allowed myself to cast these on. This pattern is a Patron exclusive pattern from the Bakery Bears as part of their Knitting University video series. You can visit their website here for more details. I'm using the remainders of the skein which I used to make my daughter's Neville's Joy socks earlier this year. Will need to make contrasting heels and toes as I don't believe there is enough yardage left. 8/1: First sock ...

#Book1CoziesClub Series First Impressions | Haunted Craft Fair Mysteries...

Image
My thoughts on Murder Can Mess Up Your Masterpiece, the first book in the Haunted Craft Fair Mysteries and Cappuccinos, Cupcakes, and a Corpse which is the first book in the Cape Bay Cafe Mystery Series by Harper Lin. These were the May and June selections for #Book1CoziesClub in 2020. Timestamps after the break.

#Book1CoziesClub: My Thoughts on Cappuccinos, Cupcakes, and a Corpse (Cape Bay Cafe Mysteries)

Image
Cappuccinos, Cupcakes, and a Corpse by Harper Lin My rating: 4 of 5 stars Read for #Book1CoziesClub More like a 3.5 - I've been meaning to read this for a while and when it came out of the selection jar, I was excited. This mystery was very easy to read and I really enjoyed it. Finding time to read lately has been very difficult, but every time I came back to this story, the chapters seemed to fly. There were a couple times where I did get slightly irritated with Francesca's inner monologue, especially towards the end. I liked that she got reprimanded by the police officer working on the case at one point in the story. It's definitely not something I see often in cozy mysteries that I've read, and the fact that this installment doesn't include a love triangle was a big plus for me. I'll definitely be continuing this series and checking out the author's other series. View all my reviews

Ended up ripping back the whole thing and starting over. My gauge has changed as I have left over yarn after working the first 2 sections again.

Knitting Diary | Tiny Windows Socks

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern: My own, incorporating the Umbrella Socks pattern by Kay Jones (link re-directs to Lovecrafts) Paid or Free: Umbrella Socks pattern is a paid for pattern Needle: US1 - 2.25 Yarn: Knit Picks Stroll in Black and Pacific Tonal Started: May 23-2020 Completed: Notes: CO 64 I've loved the honeycomb design of the Honeycomb Stroller Blanket (link re-directs to free pattern on Howstuffworks.com) since I knit it. I wanted to use it on something I could wear and I really have no need for another blanket. I'm trying out this idea with an afterthought heel to begin with, since I think it will be easier than trying to put in a heel flat and gusset as well as try to figure out the stitch pattern in the round. 5/26/20: Change of plans. The stitch count didn't work and once I figured out how to make it work, the design looks more like little windows than honeycombs. Same stitch technique, but smaller number of stitches and rows. So I changed the yarn and w...

Knitting Diary | Campside Cardi

Image
My Ravelry Project Page Pattern: Campside Cardi by Alicia Plummer (link re-directs to Lovecrafts) Paid or Free: Paid on Ravelry or Lovecrafts Size: 51 Needle: US8 - 5.0mm               US9 - 5.5mm Yarn: Lion Brand LB Collection Superwash Merino - 6 skeins in Hunter Started: May 31,2020 Completed: July 26, 2020 Notes: Cast this on as part of the Campside Cardi KAL being hosted by Jana at Purl Together 7/12/2020: Bound off the body, started in on the collar instead of the sleeves. I figured it would be a lot easier to work on the collar without the sleeves flapping around while I worked. Also started in on my 4th ball of yarn. I do have a little left of my 3rd ball, but it wouldn't have been enough to do the entire collar so I'll use that when I start the sleeves.

Knitting Diary | Fire Side Chat Blanket

My Ravelry Project Page Pattern : Fire Side Chat Blanket by Molly Conroy (Link re-directs to Ravelry. As far as I can see, this pattern is not available elsewhere.) Cost : Free as a Ravelry Download Yarn : Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn in Charcoal, Teal, Succulent, and Oxford Gray (1 skein each) Needle Size : 15mm Started : 7/1/2020 Finished : Notes : CO 97 to start. My cousin called a month or so ago and let us know that he and his wife are expecting their first child! Of course, I had to knit a blanket for them. Since we do not yet know if it will be a boy or girl, I wanted a pattern that is unisex. I found the Fire Side Chat Blanket by Molly Conroy. This blanket uses super bulky yarn, but I decided to use a worsted weight yarn held double to get a bulky weight and a use a smaller needle. Instead of striping the colors per the pattern, I will be marling the colors together, inspired by the Marl-a-long hosted by Amy from the Stranded Podcast (she talks about it in this video ) and my...
