Books: My Thoughts on The Lying Game

The Lying Game The Lying Game by Ruth Ware
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Read this as part of a group read with Elizabeth (Lizziefaye Loves Books) for #MarchMysteryMadness

I've read one of Ruth Ware's books prior to reading this one. That was The Death of Mrs. Westaway, which got just a little higher rating from me than this one. Even reflecting on that book now, I still feel that book was a more enjoyable read for me than this one.

This story just didn't keep my interest. For something that is tagged as Thriller or Suspense, this did not keep me at the edge of my seat or make me want to know what happened. I pretty much figured out the main points of the mystery aspect early, so my journey with this book was just waiting for everything to be revealed.

I think this story would've worked better for me if I connected or even felt a little for Isa, who is the person we see the story unfold from. I do think Isa was the right choice to be our narrator, but seeing things through her eyes did not serve what I think was the intended purpose of having her as the narrator for me. The suspense in this story didn't come to play for me until very close to the end, but it had nothing to do with the mystery.

I listened to the entirety of this book on audio and I thought the narrator was great, but this story is not one that I would say I enjoyed. It was just ok. I have one more Ruth Ware book in my possession and I'm really weighing whether or not I should read it. After two books, I still feel like maybe this author's writing style is not for me.
